Bristol’s hunger for coal sparked a bold idea, drive a railway straight from the pits at Coalpit Heath into the city. With Royal Assent granted on 19th June 1828, the Bristol & Gloucestershire Railway was born.
One of the line’s most ambitious features was the Staple Hill Tunnel, begun in 1834. In this episode, we look at a few tales behind this local landmark
